Release of new domain name extensions

Since January 2014, ICAAN has been in the process of releasing new domain extensions. Over 250 new extensions have already been delegated, with potentially thousands more in the coming years. Prior to the release, we were limited to the common extensions at the end of a web address, like .com, .org and .net.

It is important to secure the domain name extensions that relate to your business and brand, such that competitors are not able to use these domains in the same or other markets from your own. The new domains also present a new opportunity to obtain a great domain name, given the majority of useful domains are already gone in the .COM space. The new domain extensions include .WEB, .SHOP, .SITE, .FILM and .HOTEL. For complete and up to date information on the available domains, please see http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/

Release of a domain goes through a number of stages, being:

  1. Trademark owners have priority to register their domains with the Trademark Clearinghouse during the gTLD sunrise period. A sunrise period of at least 30 days is given to trademark owners.
  2. After the sunrise period, a priority pre-registration period begins, called a landrush. This is a premium period, where if multiple applications for a domain are received, an auction takes place.
  3. General availability period open to the public, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The domains listed in the table above are already in this phase.
